DataStax Logo DataStax, the commercial services provider for the Apache Cassandra NoSQL database, has announced the release of a software distribution that links the Hadoop and Hive Apache projects with the highly scaling, column-based database. Cassandra was originally developed by Facebook and is used at web services such as Digg, Twitter and Reddit. The founders of DataStax, previously named Riptano, are former employees of Facebook.

Called Brisk, the package consists of a database with low latency, Hadoop's MapReduce implementation for the processing and analysis of large data volumes, and the Hive warehouse project; Brisk is reportedly suitable for websites with a lot of visitors and for applications that have to react in near real time.

The initial Brisk version consists of Hadoop 0.20.2, Hive 0.7 and Cassandra 0.7.4, though it replaces the Hadoop File System (HDFS) in the MapReduce implementation with an interface called CassandraFS. In its announcement press release, the company says that Brisk will be available under the Apache open source license within the next 45 days.
