Cassandra Database accepted as a Apache Top-Level Project
Apache Software Foundation (ASF) member Matthieu Riou has announced that the open source Cassandra database has been accepted as an Apache Top-Level Project (TLP). The move marks the end of Cassandra's time in the Apache Software Foundation's Incubator.
The Cassandra distributed database management system was originally developed by Facebook, which became an Apache Software Foundation Gold Sponsor last month, and was open sourced in July of 2008. Facebook also contributes to several other Apache Projects, including Thrift and the Hive sub-project of Apache Hadoop. Cassandra, a highly scalable distributed database, brings together the fully distributed design of Amazon's large-scale Dynamo key-value store and the ColumnFamily-based data model of Google's BigTable.
The latest release of Cassandra is version 0.5.0 which features improved overall concurrency compared to previous releases. Cassandra is used by a number of other companies, such as Cisco, Twitter, Digg and Rackspace, and is released under version 2 of the Apache License.
