Cassandra service provider Riptano receives $2.7 million in funding
Riptano has announced that it has received $2.7 million in venture funding. According to the company, which provides software, support and training for Apache Cassandra, the Series A funding is led by venture capital (VC) firm Lightspeed Venture Partners with participation from private investor Jason Calacanis and Sequoia Capital.
Riptano confirmed that it has now added John Vrionis of Lightspeed Venture Partners to its board. Vrionis joined the VC firm in 2006 and previously worked as a marketing and product manager for Determina, which has since been acquired by VMware. Discussing the funding, Riptano co-founder and CEO Matt Pfeil said, "Data is growing at an exponential rate. It’s a challenge that everyone is facing," adding that, "Cassandra is a distributed database for big data that rapidly scales on commodity hardware in the cloud or across your own data centres, which saves companies money and developers time".
The Cassandra distributed database management system was originally developed by Facebook and was open sourced in July of 2008. In February of this year, it was accepted as an Apache Top-Level Project (TLP). Cassandra is used by a number of other companies, such as Cisco, Twitter, Digg and Rackspace, and is released under version 2 of the Apache License.
