Cassandra Logo Nearly five months after 0.7.0 arrived, the Apache Cassandra development team has released version 0.8.0 of its highly scalable, column-oriented, NoSQL database. Cassandra 0.8.0 now includes distributed counters and supports encryption of intranode traffic.

It also sees the debut of the Cassandra Query Language (CQL), a structured query language. CQL attempts to push as much of the functionality of Cassandra server-side and, it turn, offers a friendlier API to the database for new users. It has a familiar SQL-ish syntax with keywords such as USE, SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, DROP and CREATE. There is no INSERT; UPDATE will create records if they don't exist. Drivers for CQL are available for Python, Java and Node.js. Additional information about CQL can be found in the official documentation and in a video of "Introduction to CQL", the presentation slides and blog posting by Courtney Robinson.

Cassandra is a distributed database management system that was originally developed by Facebook, and open sourced in July 2008 to become the basis of a project in the Apache Foundation's Incubator. In late February 2010, it was accepted as an Apache Top-Level Project (TLP). It is used at web services such as Digg, Twitter and Reddit.

Details about the latest stable update can be found in the mailing list announcement, the release notes and in the change log. Cassandra 0.8.0 is available to download from the project's web site. Apache Cassandra is licensed under the Apache Licence 2.0.
