Riptano logo Founded by Jonathan Ellis, the Cassandra Project chair, and Matt Pfeil, Riptano offers training, consulting, and support for the Apache Cassandra NoSQL database. Ellis and Pfeil were previously employed as Cassandra developers by cloud provider Rackspace.

According to an InformationWeek report, Rackspace has invested in Riptano, although the amount of the investment has not been revealed. Rackspace still employs a number of Cassandra developers and at some point, plans to include Cassandra in its product range.

Cassandra Logo Cassandra, a distributed database management system, was originally developed by Facebook and was open sourced in July of 2008 as an Apache Foundation project. In late February of this year, it was accepted as an Apache Top-Level Project (TLP). Although still relatively new, Cassandra is already used by a number of prominent companies, such as Cisco, Twitter and Digg. It is released under version 2 of the Apache License.
