VirtualBox logo The VirtualBox development team has announced the arrival of version 4.1.10 of its open source desktop virtualisation application for x86 hardware. As is typical with maintenance releases, the fifth update to the 4.1.x branch adds no new features, instead focusing on improving the software's overall stability and addressing a variety of bugs found in the previous versions.

VirtualBox 4.1.10 corrects a potential guest memory corruption issue and includes updated Guest Additions for Linux, Solaris and Windows. The Linux Additions add support for X.Org Server 1.12 and enable 3D passthrough on Oracle Linux/Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.2, while the Solaris Additions include fixes for problems with Solaris 11 guests and a missing 64-bit OpenGL library, and the Windows Additions add adaptations for Windows 8 (currently available as a consumer preview) and fixes shared folders bugs.

Changes to 3D support include fixes for Linux hosts with NVIDIA graphics and the WDDM driver. For Mac OS X hosts, Python support has been fixed on 10.7 Lion and, for Linux hosts/guests, there are fixes for Linux 3.1 RC1. Regressions related to 3D support and Solaris Additions have also been addressed.

More details about the update, including a full list of fixes, are provided in the change log. VirtualBox 4.1.10 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris. Source code and binaries for VirtualBox are distributed under the terms of the GPLv2; the Extension Pack, which adds support for USB 2.0 and remote boot, can be downloaded under a Personal Use and Evaluation (PUEL) licence.
