VirtualBox logo The VirtualBox development team has released the fourth maintenance update to the 4.1.x branch of its open source desktop virtualisation application for x86 hardware. As a maintenance update, VirtualBox 4.1.8 has no new features but does include changes that improve overall stability while also addressing several bugs found in the previous versions.

Changes to 3D support in VirtualBox 4.1.8 correct fullscreen mode issues for ATI graphics chips, Windows Media Player XPDM-based rendering, and include other XPDM and WDDM fixes. A fix for building VirtualBox with the soon-to-be-released Linux 3.2 kernels and Fedora's "2.6.41" kernel is also included. A problem that caused the status icons to stop updating when a virtual machine is paused has been fixed, and the VirtualBox Guest Additions have been updated to fix shared folder problems on Solaris and Direct3D support on Windows.

Further details, including a full list of fixes, can be found in the change log. VirtualBox 4.1.8 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris. Both the VirtualBox source code and the binary are distributed under the terms of the GPLv2, while the Extension Pack, which adds support for USB 2.0 and remote boot, can be downloaded under a Personal Use and Evaluation (PUEL) licence.
