Piwik Logo The Piwik development team has issued version 1.2 of its open source web analysis software. According to the developers, the latest release of Piwik is a "significant update" that addresses a number of bugs found in the previous version, adds several new features, and brings improved performance.

Piwik 1.2 features the addition of first party cookies. First party cookies help the software to report with greater data accuracy as they're rarely deleted compared to third party cookies. Custom variables have also been added, allowing users to track up to five custom variables per visit in Piwik. Other changes include support for real time segmentation, new API helper methods for report requests, and performance improvements for large Piwik setups. The developers note that version 1.2 contains breaking changes in the JavaScript API and many database schema changes, advising users to "be careful when running the Update script, do not click multiple times and give it some time to finish".

Once installed on a web server, the PHP-based Piwik software, an alternative to Google Analytics, provides detailed reports on website visitors, including search engines and keywords used, language and the most popular pages.

More details about the release can be found in a post on the Piwik blog and in the change log. Piwik 1.2 is available to download (direct download) from the project's site and is licensed under the GPL.
