Piwik Logo The Piwik development team has published a release candidate for version 1.5 of its open source web analysis suite. Piwik 1.5 now allows users to track custom variables on a per page basis and features the addition of e-commerce analytics so that developers can track, for example, product views when visitors add items to their shopping carts and e-commerce orders.

When drawing graphs, Piwik no longer relies on Flash as it now includes JavaScript Canvas Charts, which draws graphs using the jqplot library. According to the developers, "The graphs have the same look and feel but are using fully open source stack". Other changes include inline help for most reports and the option to upload custom logos which can be displayed in the UI, on the login screen and in email reports. A new privacy plugin has also been added that makes it easy to setup IP anonymisation from the Privacy settings page.

At the same time, the project has published a release candidate for version 1.5 of its mobile app. The Piwik Mobile app for Android 2.1 or later now displays visitor statistics in real time and supports screen rotation. Fonts and images are now said to be sharper and the app's performance and usability have both been improved. Support for the latest tablet version of Android, version 3.0 "Honeycomb", is also included.

The developers say that they are seeking more users interested in testing the public release candidate before the stable version is released. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised.

More details about the release candidate can be found in a post on the Piwik blog and on the Piwik forum. Users can download (direct download) the Piwik 1.5 RC from the project's web site. The stable 1.5 release is expected to arrive in the next few days provided no blocker bugs are discovered.

Piwik is licensed under the GPL. The latest stable release is version 1.4 from early May, an update that added support for counting IPv6 visitors.
