Dead on time, the Ubuntu developers have released the first and only (planned) release candidate of the forthcoming version 9.04. In addition to software updates (kernel 2.6.28.8, X-Server 1.6, Gnome 2.26, KDE 4.2.1 and OpenOffice 3.0.1), Ubuntu 9.04 ("Jaunty Jackalope") offers a 30 per cent faster boot process than the previous version and supports the new Ext4 file system.

Since the beta a further change has been made to the new notification system that uniformly displays system messages in the top right corner of the desktop. Now the update tool automatically starts pending software updates after one week, rather than just indicating updates are available and waiting for the user to start the update process. Pending security updates will notify users on a daily basis. Following numerous complaints by Ubuntu users, the previous update behaviour can now be restored if desired. More details about the changes from the beta, as well as current problems that also affect updating from Ubuntu 8.l0 and the 9.04 beta, can be found in the release notes.

Several installation images of Ubuntu 9.04 RC1 for x86 and x64 processors are available to download: Desktop (live system with graphical installer), Server and Alternate install (text-based installer). The Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) variation offers an image of the UNR for installing the release candidate on netbooks from a USB flash drive. The final version is scheduled to be released on the 23rd of this month.
