The first alpha version of the forthcoming Ubuntu 9.04, also known as "Jaunty Jackalope", was made available to download last weekend. Essentially, this release updates a number of packages from the current version 8.10. Some progress has also been made with the port to the ARM architecture. The developers are hoping to give advice on new ideas for Jaunty at a meeting in early December.

The Ubuntu team explicitly points out that alpha 1 is a test version, is not suitable for productive use, and very probably still contains errors. At present, only images for the server CD and the alternative installation CD are available. The conventional desktop CD, which will contain a live system with an option to install it on the hard disk, is scheduled to come out with the next alpha 2, probably in mid-December. The complete version of Ubuntu 9.04 is due to appear on 23 April next.
