Ubuntu 9.04, scheduled for April 2009, will be named "Jaunty Jackalope". The announcement was made by Mark Shuttleworth on the Ubuntu-devel-announce mailing list.

Shuttleworth also set out a number of goals for 9.04 in the announcement with reducing boot time high on the list. "Let's see if we can make booting or resuming Ubuntu blindingly quick" said Shuttleworth. "Blurring of web services and desktop applications" was another goal Shuttleworth listed, looking for richer blend of Ubuntu desktop applications and web services for Jaunty Jackalope.

Also announced in the posting was the moving of all of Jaunty Jackalope's code into the Bazaar source code control system, with an aim to get wider participation in the development of Ubuntu 9.04.

The jackalope is a mythical creature which looks like a rabbit with antlers.
