Red Hat Logo US software vendor Red Hat has announced that it has acquired Makara, a California-based cloud application platform specialist. Makara provides a cloud platform, available in three editions, for Java and PHP applications on both private and public clouds, such as Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).

According to Red Hat, the addition of Makara's technologies will help it to accelerate the development of its Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solution as part of its Cloud Foundations portfolio by integrating the JBoss Enterprise Middleware infrastructure with Makara's Cloud Application Platform. Launched in mid-June of this year, the Red Hat Cloud Foundations are aimed at helping business customers plan, develop and maintain infrastructure-as-a-service and platform-as-a-service products in the cloud.

Discussing the announcement, Red Hat President of Products and Technologies Paul Cormier said, "Cloud Foundations is about enabling customers and developers to have an easy on-ramp to the cloud," adding that, "With the addition of Makara, we aim to further simplify application deployment and management".
