It's official; Mozilla will not develop a standalone version of the Firefox browser for the Apple iPhone, according to a report on CNET. Instead, Mozilla developer Ragavan Srinivasan has said in a blog post, Mozilla will focus its resources on Firefox Home for iPhone.

A free cloud based application, Firefox Home allows access to a users Firefox desktop history, bookmarks and tabs from an iPhone. For platforms that cannot support the full Firefox browser Firefox Home at least allows access to users Firefox history. It does of course require that the user is running Firefox Sync. At present Firefox Sync is still an Add-on, although it will be an integrated feature of Firefox version 4.0, currently in beta.

Srinivasan also says that Mozilla is working to bring Firefox Home to other mobile devices that don't have the Firefox browser. In the coming months it is hoped that Home will be available for the BlackBerry and Symbian platforms, which combined make up around 60% of the mobile phone market. Interest in an Apple iPad version prompts Mozilla to say that the option to create a version for the iPad which makes use of the larger screen real estate will be investigated.
