The Mozilla developers have announced the release of version 2.0 beta 1 of SeaMonkey, their "all-in-one internet application suite". The successor to the old Netscape Communicator and Mozilla Application suites includes a web browser with advanced email and newsgroup support, an IRC chat client and HTML editing support. The SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 1 development release is based on the same browser core as Firefox 3.5.1 and includes several new features.

The preview release features a new download manager that supports cross-session resumable downloads and improved feeds. Support for new command line options and mail archiving have also been added. The previously included Palm Sync Extension has been removed as it wasn't widely used. Crash recovery (also called session restore) has been added so that if SeaMonkey crashes, all of the tabs and windows will be automatically restored and the browser and MailNews toolbars are now fully customisable. RSS and Atom feed support has been added to the MailNews component and the Password Manager has been changed to an improved version with easier searching and new notification bars.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes and change log. SeaMonkey 2.0 Beta 1 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. The developers also note that SeaMonkey 2.0 no longer supports Windows 95, 98, ME, NT and Mac OS X 10.3.

SeaMonkey binaries are released under the Mozilla SeaMonkey End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public Licence, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1.
