SeaMonkey Logo Mozilla has announced that it is discontinuing support for the 1.x branch of its SeaMonkey "all-in-one internet application suite". SeaMonkey is the successor to the old Netscape Communicator and Mozilla Application suites and includes a web browser with advanced email and newsgroup support, an IRC chat client and HTML editing support.

Version 1.0 of SeaMonkey was originally released in January of 2006 and was followed by 1.1 one year later. Mozilla says that the developers are no longer going to release security updates for the internet application suite "due to resource constraints" and, as such, the development team strongly urge users still running old Mozilla Suite or Netscape 4, 6 or 7 to upgrade to the latest 2.x branch of SeaMonkey.

Users that can't immediately upgrade to the 2.x branch can, however, install the final 1.x update, version 1.1.19, which, according to Mozilla, addresses "a few security issues, but not all known security vulnerabilities, some of which may even be grave". Further details about SeaMonkey 1.1.19 are available in the release notes.

SeaMonkey binaries are released under the Mozilla SeaMonkey End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public Licence, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1. The latest stable release of SeaMonkey is version 2.0.3 from mid-February.
