WattOS Logo The wattOS developers have announced the release of update to their lightweight Linux distribution. WattOS, as its name suggests, is focused on low power usage and having a small footprint – allowing it to run on older, less powerful hardware. To keep the distribution lightweight, its user interface is based on the Openbox and LXDE desktop environments.

The latest release of wattOS is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" and features several advanced power management tools to help users consume less energy for their "daily computing needs". According to the developers, the latest update has a much faster boot and install time and overall responsiveness is improved. Other changes include replacing the Exaile music player with Rhythmbox and the addition of the F-Spot personal photo management application

More details about the release can be found in the release notes and screenshots are provided. wattOS R2 is available to download as an ISO image file for x86 systems from the project's site. A PPC version for G4 and G5-based Mac systems is still in development.
