The Puppy Linux development team has released version 5.2.8 of its minimal Linux distribution. According to project coordinator Larry Short, the latest release of Lucid Puppy is "the fastest and friendliest Lucid yet" thanks to several under-the-hood changes.

Puppy Linux 5.2.8, also referred to as "Lupu", is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx binary packages and the 2.6.33.2 Linux kernel. It is the first release of the distribution to use versions of the C and FFmpeg libraries that have been optimised for i686 computers instead of the older i386 systems. Enhancements have also been made to the hardware detection and configuration routines.

Other changes include new and updated firmware and drivers, as well as user interface updates aimed at new and experienced users alike. The Roxterm console replaces x-terminal, and the Control Panel has been updated so that it is easier to customise and configure.

More details about the update can be found in a post on Puppy Linux founder Barry Kauler's blog and in the release notes. Puppy Linux 5.2.8 is available to download from the project's mirrors and is released under the GPL/LGPL licence.
