KDE SC 4.6 final released
The KDE project release team has announced the arrival of version 4.6 of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC), the latest major release of the popular Linux and Unix desktop. According to the developers, the major update to the free open source K Desktop Environment (KDE) brings "significant improvements" and focuses on improving the performance and stability of development platform, the applications compilation and the plasma workspaces, while also adding many new features.
KDE SC 4.6.0 features a new "Share" button in the Gwenview image viewer to export pictures to popular photo sharing and social networking sites, and the addition of faceted browsing to the Dolphin file manager; this allows users to use multiple filters to find files via their metadata. The developers also note that the search interfaces of Kfind and Dolphin have been updated with a new, simplified search bar. The Kate text-editor has also gained several new features, including the ability to always load plugins, add scripts to the menu and bind shortcuts, and swap file support; also new SQL Query, GNU Debugger (GDB) and Highlight Selected Text plugins. The included games have also received upgrades and additions: Klickety, an adaptation of the Clickomania game, has returned, and the Palapeli jigsaw puzzle game includes a new puzzle splicer.
Further information about this major update can be found on the KDE SC 4.6 Info Page and in the official release announcement. Source packages for self-compilation and binary packages for various Linux distributions are available to download from the project's website. KDE is licensed under a combination of the LGPLv2, BSD, MIT and X11 licences for core libraries and the GPLv2 or GPLv3 for applications.
