KDE Logo The KDE Project has announced the arrival of version 4.5.3 of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC), the third point update to the latest major release of the popular Linux and Unix desktop. According to the developers, the maintenance release of the free open source K Desktop Environment (KDE) includes a variety of translation updates and bug fixes for the the Plasma desktop and Netbook workspaces, the KDE Applications and the KDE Platform.

The third in a series of monthly service updates, KDE SC 4.5.3 contains no new features but addresses a cache invalidation bug in KSharedDataCache that lead to stability issues when daylight saving time changed. Other changes include updates to icon overlays in the Dolphin file manager for KDE to fix an issue after adjusting the zoom level and improvements to the DjVu and XPS back ends in the Okular universal document viewer. All users are advised to upgrade to the latest release.

More details about the maintenance update can be found in the official release announcement, on the KDE SC 4.5.3 Info Page and in the change log. Source code for self-compilation and binary packages for various Linux distributions are available to download from the project's website.

The next bug fix update, KDE SC 4.5.4, is scheduled to be released on the 30th of November. The next major release, version 4.6.0, is expected to arrive on the 26th of January, 2011.

KDE is licensed under a combination of the LGPLv2, BSD, MIT and X11 licences for core libraries and the GPLv2 or GPLv3 for applications.
