KDE Logo The KDE Project has announced the arrival of the first beta for version 4.6 of the KDE Software Compilation (KDE SC), a development preview of the next major release of this popular Linux and Unix desktop manager. According to the developers, the beta release of KDE SC 4.6 includes updates for the Plasma workspaces, the KDE Applications and the KDE Platform. The final release of KDE SC 4.6.0 is expected to arrive on the 26th of January, 2011.

KDE SC 4.6 Beta 1 features significant improvements to desktop search and revamped activities in the Plasma Desktop, as well as major performance boosts to window management and desktop effects. The Dolphin file manager now also searches inside of files and adds faceted browsing, using the files' metadata to filter results and directories. Other changes include the introduction of Akonadi in Kontact 4.6, a Git plug-in for Dolphin, improved mobile device support and the desktop is moving away from HAL as hardware abstraction layer.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

Further information about the release can be found in the official release announcement and on the KDE SC 4.5.80 Info Page. Source code for self-compilation and binary packages for various Linux distributions are available to download from the project's web site.

KDE is licensed under a combination of the LGPLv2, BSD, MIT and X11 licences for core libraries and the GPLv2 or GPLv3 for applications. The latest stable release is KDE SC 4.5.3, a maintenance release from the 3rd of November.
