FreeBSD Logo The FreeBSD developers have made available a second release candidate (RC2) for FreeBSD 7.4. This is a precursor to a third release candidate, due next week, as the developers say that there are "several bugs we feel are critical enough to warrant fixing before the 8.2/7.4 releases are finalized". FreeBSD 8.2 saw its second release candidate made available last week.

At the time of this posting, the project's FreeBSD 7.4 Release Process page still shows 24 January (today) as the release date for the final version. As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they encounter.

More details about the second release candidate can be found in a post to the FreeBSD mailing list and on the FreeBSD 7.4 Release Engineering wiki page. FreeBSD 7.4 RC2 is available to download for amd64, i386, pc98 and sparc64 architectures from one of the project's FTP sites. The latest stable release is FreeBSD 8.1 from July of last year.
