FreeBSD 9.0 approaches with final RC

FreeBSD logo The FreeBSD project has published the third and possibly final release candidate for version 9.0 of its FreeBSD operating system. According to the mailing list announcement by Ken Smith, a member of the Release Engineering Team, FreeBSD 9.0 RC3 "should be the last of the test builds" and the developers hope to "begin the final release builds in about a week".

Originally expected to arrive in September of this year, FreeBSD 9.0 has experienced several delays on the way to a final stable release. Improvements in version 9.0 of FreeBSD include infrastructure enhancements such as a new Clang/LLVM based compilation system, wider use of Dtrace, more SMP-scalable TCP/IP, ZFS updates, support for more than 32 CPUs and support for USB 3.0. Initial NUMA (Non-Uniform Memory Access) support has also been added. Users testing the release candidate are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they find.

FreeBSD 9.0 RC3 is available to download from the project's site and is licensed under the two-clause BSD licence. The current stable release of FreeBSD is version 8.2 from February of this year.
