The FreeBSD developers have made third release candidates available for FreeBSD 8.2, the "production" version, and FreeBSD 7.4, the "legacy production" version. The releases come after some delays; the release was originally scheduled for 24 January, but has been put back to allow for a third release candidate. The developers say that they currently know of no issues "large enough to hold up the release for", and unless an issue is found, a release will happen "in a week or so".

8.2-RC3 is available for amd64, i386, ia64, pc98, powerpc and sparc64, while the 7.4-RC3 only on amd64, i386, pc98 and sparc64. The developers are still working on adding the KDE packages to the 7.4 ISO disk images and hope to have them included for the final release. Instructions for updating to the release candidates are included in the release candidate announcement. Those tracking all the changes to the new FreeBSDs should refer to the Release Engineering TODO pages for 8.2 and 7.4. FreeBSD is released under the BSD licence.
