The GNU/Hurd development team at the Debian project has released a version of the Distribution based on Debian 7 "Wheezy" and the GNU Hurd kernel. Debian GNU/Hurd 2013 is the first major release of the distribution after years of development work, even though it is not an official Debian release. The Hurd kernel is a Unix-like microkernel design based on the Mach kernel and has itself been under development since 1990.

Debian GNU/Hurd is available for the i386 architecture and the developers are saying that more than 10,000 packages are available in the repositories, which they say encompasses more than 75% of the entire Debian archive. The release uses version 1.3.99 of the GNU Hurd kernel which the developers say has reached "a very decent state" given the limited resources of the project; the kernel is complemented by the usual Debian userland tools and programs. The system is installed with the familiar graphical Debian installer.

Debian GNU/Hurd 2013 is available for download as a CD, DVD and net install image from the Debian Ports servers. The project provides configuration documentation, an FAQ and a status overview of the current state of the kernel.
