Debian Squeeze to feature completely free kernel
With Debian Squeeze as its next stable release, the Debian project is expected to achieve its aim of providing a fully open source and free Linux distribution: already having removed non-free firmware files from previous Debian releases, the Debian developers have, for their Squeeze release, targeted the kernel and removed all firmware components that don't comply with the Debian project's definition of open source code.
However, the Debian developers freely admit that some users will need non-free firmware to run Debian Squeeze on their systems. The project will, therefore, continue to offer these components in the non-free repository – but has also asked manufacturers to release their code so that it can be reintroduced into future releases of Debian.
