kFreeBSD: Debian "Squeeze" with a FreeBSD kernel

Debian The Debian Release Team have confirmed that the previously announced port of the Debian system to the FreeBSD kernel will be handled equally with the other release ports. kFreeBSD is a port of Debian with the regular package set that consists of GNU userland using the GNU C library on top of FreeBSD's kernel.

The upcoming Debian 6.0 release (code named "Squeeze"), when released, will officially be available with Linux and FreeBSD kernels. The decision to include the FreeBSD kernel into the official release process is aimed at offering users "a broader choice of kernels" and providing access to several additional features such as jails and the OpenBSD Packet Filter.

According to the project's page, there are still "a large amount of packages that need fixing" and developers are encouraged to help port packages. The port will be available for AMD64/Intel EM64T and i386 processor architectures. A TODO list for GNU/kFreeBSD is available on the project's website. It's still unclear exactly when Debian Linux 6.0 will be released; a release schedule has not yet been made available but is expected soon.
