Amarok Logo The Amarok Project has released version 2.3.1 of its popular open source music player for the KDE desktop, code named "Clear Light". The first point update to the 2.3.x branch of Amarok is a maintenance release that addresses several bugs in the previous release and includes a number of new features.

The update features the addition of the Automated Playlist Generator, allowing users to automatically create play lists based on specific criteria, such as song length or file size. Two new applets for the Context Menu have also been added, the first of which, the Upcoming Events applet, shows concerts and events that the currently playing artist will be participating in. The second new applet is called Similar Artists and uses the Last.fm online database to find and display a list of artists similar to those in a users collection. Other improvements include updated cover fetching and support for a new system tray protocol.

More details about the release, including a video detailing the latest improvements, can be found in the official release announcement. Amarok 2.3.1 is available to download from the project's website and a user guide is provided. Amarok is released under version 2 of the GNU General Public License (GPLv2).
