The Amarok developers have announced the release of version 2.1 (code-named Let There Be Light) of their popular free music player for Linux and Unix systems. Version 2.1 of Amarok includes several improvements, new features and bug fixes.

The release features playlist improvements that allow users to easily search for tracks, filter content, queue tracks and even tell Amarok to stop playing after a specific track. A new playlist layout editor lets users create and modify their own play lists to include as much, or as little information as desired. Automatic and manual bookmarking has been added so that users can mark their place in podcasts, audio books and other long audio files and easily pause and then resume playback when they return to the track at a later time.

Amarok URLs let users create links to a certain place in the application, including songs from integrated online services like Jamendo or audio books on LibriVox, and share them with friends. The Last.fm interface has been improved and now allows users to play any tag, user, or artist radio and mark songs in their local collection. Support for ReplayGain has been added to equalise the volume of songs with ReplayGain tags, but requires that the GStreamer Phonon back-end is installed.

Previous versions of Amarok are available for Windows and Mac OS X, however, they are still marked as experimental betas and are not officially supported. The likely reason for this is that Amarok requires KDE 4 and ports of KDE 4 on Windows and Mac are far from stable.

More details about the release can be found in the release notes. Amarok 2.1 is available to download.
