openSUSE logo The openSUSE project release team has published the first milestone of version 12.2 of its Linux distribution. The development milestone is the first of four planned milestone builds, which will be followed by a beta and two release candidates. According to the project's Factory Portal page, the final version of openSUSE 12.2 is scheduled to arrive in mid-July 2012.

Aimed at developers and testers, openSUSE 12.2 Milestone 1 contains very few changes; its developers say that the main goal of the release was "to find all the places that need to be changed from 12.1 to 12.2". Other changes include updated artwork, a new version of the open source Firefox web browser and upgrading the KDE desktop environment to version 4.8. A list of known issues can be found on the most annoying bugs page.

The first milestone release of openSUSE 12.2 is available to download for 32- and 64-bit systems from the project's site. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback and report any bugs that they find. The current stable release is openSUSE 12.1 from November 2011.
