openSUSE.jpeg The openSUSE developers have announced the release of the sixth milestone in the development of openSUSE 11.2, code named Fichte. The sixth milestone includes several changes and updates since the release of the previous milestone at the beginning of August.

openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 6 features version 2.6.31 RC6 of the Linux kernel and version 2.28 Beta of the GNOME desktop environment. New package updates and additions include Firefox 3.5.2, OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 Beta 2, VirtualBox 3.0.4 and version 2.6.7 of the GIMP image manipulation and editing application. The release also includes PackageKit 0.5.1 and version 3.1 of the Python scripting language. As with all development releases, openSUSE Milestone 6 still contains some bugs and is only intended for testing, not for production use. A regularly updated list of the most annoying bugs can be found in the project's wiki.

More details about the release can be found in the change log. openSUSE 11.2 Milestone 6 is available to download for 32 and 64 bit x86 systems as a DVD or LiveCD image from the projects developer/get it section. An overview of the planned features for the final openSUSE 11.2 release can be found on the distributions own feature-tracking system, called OpenFate. The final version of Fichte is expected to be released in November.
