jQuery Mobile logo After a "year of refinements" the jQuery Mobile developers have finalised version 1.0 of the HTML5-based user interface libraries and framework for mobile platforms. Based on jQuery core and jQuery's UI library, the platform has been developed to work with Apple iOS, Android 2.1-2.3 and Honeycomb, Windows Phone 7 and 7.5, Blackberry 6.0, 7 and Playbook, Palm WebOS, Firefox Mobile, Opera Mobile, MeeGo 1.2, Kindle 3 and Fire, and the desktop versions of Chrome 11-15, Firefox 4-8, Internet Explorer 7-9 and Opera 10-11.

The framework allows developers to write clean HTML pages with a unified set of touch-optimised UI widgets and, where CSS and JavaScript are available, have the interface progressively enhanced with, for example, page transitions and AJAX-powered navigation. The framework adjusts automatically to different capabilities, screen sizes and layouts on smartphones and tablets and can also add accessibility features to the interface to support screen readers and other assistive mechanisms. Interfaces developed with jQuery Mobile can be styled using the newly released ThemeRoller for Mobile.

Demo pages not only give examples of jQuery Mobile's functionality, but also introduce how to practically use the framework. In finalising jQuery Mobile the developers have worked on page enhancement performance, providing a 30 to 50 per cent improvement in speed over October's RC2 release. The developers do remind potential users that jQuery Mobile currently only works with jQuery 1.6.4, not the recently released jQuery 1.7; they plan to support 1.7 in a future 1.1 release of the mobile framework. jQuery Mobile is dual licensed under either the MIT or GPLv2 licences. Instructions to obtain the code, either by downloading, forking from github or by using content delivery networks, are available.
