The jQuery developers have released a maintenance update to the jQuery JavaScript framework and released the first alpha of jQuery Mobile, a version of the framework optimised for touch interfaces on smartphones and tablets.

The updated jQuery 1.4.3 now passes JSLint, Douglas Crockford's JavaScript verification tool, offers improved performance in the CSS module after a rewrite, provides faster traversal methods (.closest(), .filter(), .is() and .find()), allows access to HTML5 data attributes and adds some new Ajax features. There is also support for easing in all animation methods and a tunable effects rate, jQuery.fx.interval, which can offer smoother animation at the cost of higher CPU utilisation.

The alpha version of JQuery Mobile, offers support for iOS (iPhone,iPad, iPod Touch) devices, Android, BlackBerry OS 6, webOS, Fennec and Opera Mobile, and aims to allow JavaScript functionality to be layered over existing HTML web pages while gracefully degrading where features are not supported in the browser. The project was announced in August and currently offers theming and layout for pages with fixed or persistent headers and footers, form controls, dialogues, list views and support for handling events and transitions. The developers say that by the time version 1.0 arrives, these components will be joined by Date and Time Pickers, a Progress Bar, a Spinner, optimisations for tablets and simpler theming.

Both jQuery 1.4.3 and jQuery Mobile alpha are licensed under the MIT licence or the GPL version 2. Download and user instructions for jQuery Mobile alpha 1 and jQuery are available. While jQuery Mobile is, as an alpha, not suited for production use, jQuery 1.4.3 is suitable and has passed the 3621 tests in its test suite.
