jQuery Logo The jQuery developers have released a maintenance update, version 1.4.4, for the jQuery JavaScript framework and released the second alpha of jQuery Mobile, a version of the framework optimised for touch interfaces on smartphones and tablets.

Version 1.4.4 of jQuery is a maintenance release that addresses a number of bugs found in the previous update and introduces a new animation method to Effects called .fadeToggle(). The developers say that, as they already have existing toggle methods in the API for sliding (.slideToggle()) and toggling classes (.toggleClass()), the next logical step was to extend the ability of a toggle to fading effects. Further details can be found in the API documentation.

The latest alpha version of jQuery Mobile corrects approximately 200 bugs from the first alpha. According to the developers "overall the quality of jQuery Mobile has been greatly improved" and a number of subsystems have been rewritten for both performance and clarity. In addition to cross-browser compatibility updates, the second alpha improves the performance of loading a large listview by about 3 times, depending upon the platform, adds new new refresh functionality to select menus and includes better page scrolling.

The jQuery Mobile 1.0 Alpha 2 Documentation provides more details about all of the changes. At least one more alpha or beta build is expected before the end of the year. The final 1.0 release is expected to arrive in January.

Both jQuery 1.4.4 and jQuery Mobile alpha are licensed under the MIT licence or GPL version 2. Download and user instructions for jQuery Mobile Alpha 2 and jQuery are available. While jQuery Mobile is, as a second alpha, not suited for production use, jQuery 1.4.4 is suitable and has passed a number of tests on all supported browsers.
