Zentyal logo Version 3.0 of the Zentyal small business server is now available; the new version upgrades the underlying operating system and integrates Samba 4. Aimed at small and medium businesses (SMBs), Zentyal is a Linux-based server distribution that can act as a Gateway, Unified Threat Manager, Office Server, Infrastructure Manager, or Unified Communications Server, or as a combination of these. The system can also be extended using over 30 modules, such as HTTP Proxy, firewall and the Zarafa collaboration platform.

One of the most notable changes in the release is the integration of version 4.0 of the Samba file sharing service, which has yet to be finalised and only just became available as a release candidate. The Zentyal developers say that the inclusion of Samba 4 means that their server OS is now a full replacement for the Windows Server Active Directory, noting that it can "use protocols to manage users, permissions and security policies that are fully compatible with any Windows server and Windows desktop".

The major update is derived from the server edition of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and includes a new Single Sign-On feature based on the open source Kerberos network authentication protocol. The latest release also, its developers say, includes significant performance and usability improvements across the distribution. Other changes include updates to the web interface, a new master-slave architecture to make it easier to synchronise users between Zentyal servers, and various module upgrades.

A full list of changes and new features, along with upgrade instructions, can be found in the release announcement and in the change log. Zentyal 3.0 is available to download for 32- and 64-bit systems. The server distribution is sponsored and developed by Spanish firm Zentyal, which offers small business and enterprise subscriptions for updates, support and signature data, as well as services for centralised management in the cloud; free Basic Subscriptions are available.
