Samba logo The Samba developers have declared that the release of Samba 3.0.36 will be the last maintenance and security release of the 3.0 series. The 3.0 series started life in September 2003 and was scheduled to end life in July. The 3.0.36 release fixes bugs which could cause a WinBind crash, ACL corruption when saving Excel files and segmentation faults when joining domains with long names. Further details are available in the release notes.

Samba 3.0 was a major update to the Windows interoperable file services, and other tools, which brought with it the ability to be a member of an Active Directory network. Since 3.0, versions 3.2, 3.3, 3.3 and 3.4 of Samba have been released, with 3.4.0 being the current stable version; though the release plan notes a bug fix release of Samba 3.4.1 is due later this month. The Samba developers strongly recommend that users of Samba 3.0 upgrade to Samba 3.4, the current release. Samba is licensed under the GPLv3.
