Rod Johnson, the original creator of the Spring Framework, has announced that he will be leaving SpringSource and VMware to "pursue other interests".

Johnson originally released the Spring application framework in 2002 and later founded the SpringSource company, serving as its CEO until it was acquired by VMware in 2009. Johnson went on to become a Senior Vice President at VMware, a position he is now relinquishing. He says he will still be a part of the Spring community and will continue to contribute to the Spring project. So far, he has not announced what he plans to do next.

Spring is an open source framework for Java application development. The latest version of the toolkit, Spring 3.1, was released in December 2011 and is licensed under the Apache 2.0 licence.
