SpringSource Logo SpringSource, an open source Java framework specialist, has announced the introduction of tc Server Spring Edition, part of tc Server 2.0. The new Spring Edition of its Apache Tomcat 6.0.25-based tc Server aimed at virtual and cloud environments includes all of the Standard Edition features as well as native Spring instrumentation and built-in application management and reporting tools. Shaun Connolly, vice president of product management for the SpringSource division of VMware, said that, “Not only is tc Server Spring Edition the best place to run Spring apps but it is ideally architected for next-generation data centre technologies”.

The VMware subsidiary says that the Spring Edition, which it calls the "lightweight edition of tc Server", will give developers "top-down insight into the performance and health of their Spring applications". Additionally, the company says that developers currently running Spring applications on Java EE servers will be able to easily migrate them to the new version and monitor all aspects of their applications performance. The new Spring Edition of the tc Server is expected to be available in early April and will start at $750 per CPU, while the Standard Edition will start at $500 per CPU. The Developer Edition will be available to download for free as part of the SpringSource Tool Suite or standalone.

Interestingly, VMware also announced the launch of a new "Spring on VMware" promotion in which licenses for tc Server are available for free to customers that purchase qualifying VMware products, including vSphere, the vCenter family of products, View or ThinApp. Through the deal, customers will receive two CPU licenses for tc Server Spring Edition and 60 days of evaluation support. The promotion, the first time that SpringSource tools have been available through the VMware channel, will end on the 8th of May, 2010. VMware acquired SpringSource for a total of $420 million in August of 2009.
