SpringSource has announced the availability of version 3.0 of its open source Spring framework for Java applications. The final version of the major release includes a number of enhancements and while Spring 2.5 currently supports several of the higher-level functionalities built on Java 5, Spring 3 provides full Java 5 support. According to Rod Johnson, general manager of the SpringSource division of VMware “Spring 3.0 makes it even easier for developers to build flexible, high-quality applications while providing a foundation for innovation in other open source projects and commercial products”.

The Spring 3.0 Java development framework features full representational state transfer (REST) support for web applications, a new expression language and streamlines configuration of Spring beans. SpringSource say that as Spring 3.0 is backwards compatible with Spring 2.5, upgrading to the latest release should be "quick and easy".

SpringSource will also be hosting several discussions about the latest release, including an overview of the 3.0 Web Stack and Enterprise JPA & Spring 3.0, at this years SpringOne 2GX Java conference in New Orleans taking place this week from the 19th to the 22nd of October.

Spring 3.0 is available to download and requires Java 5 or later. Spring is licensed under version 2 of the Apache License.
