Piwik logo Version 1.6 of Piwik, an open source web analytics suite, has been released. This major update adds several new features and addresses multiple unspecified security vulnerabilities found in previous versions. Specific details about the security holes were not provided.

E-commerce analytics in Piwik have been improved: as well as counting shop visits and purchases, it is now possible to track prices and product categories. Functions for analysing page titles and URLs have also been added. Other changes include dashboard updates and a new ImageGraph plug-in which generates graphs for any report.

Because the database structure is modified during the update to version 1.6, the development team is advising users to close Piwik and perform the update from the command line, especially on large web sites. As the release is rated as critical, all users are advised to upgrade to the new version as soon as possible.

More details about the release can be found in a post on the Piwik blog and in the change log. At the time of writing, the project's security page has yet to be updated. Piwik 1.6 is available to downloadDirect download from the project's site.

Piwik, which aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics, is licensed under the GPL. According to the project's site, it is already used by more than 150,000 web sites around the world.
