Canonical developer Karl Fogel has announced that the open sourcing of Launchpad has been delayed. Originally, Launchpad, the software and site that drives Canonical open source and project collaboration, was to go open source on the 21st of July. Canonical now say this will be at some time in "July / August 2009".

According to Fogel, the reason for the more flexible scheduling is that the developers want to release the code on Launchpad using Bazaar's "brisbane-core" development format, saying that "we want to test it pretty thoroughly first". Fogel says that a more exact date will be announced once further testing has been carried out.

The Launchpad collaboration site is used to host Ubuntu and various other open source projects. Other projects that use the Launchpad system include MySQL, Zope and Silva. Once released as open source, Launchpad will be available under version 3 of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPLv3).

Update: Canonical has now announced that it has released the source code for Launchpad on schedule. For more details, including an update from developer Karl Fogel, please see "Canonical's Launchpad open sourced".
