Canonical, the founder and sponsor of the Ubuntu project, has announced that it has released the source code for Launchpad on schedule. Launchpad, the site and software that drives Canonical's open source and project collaboration, hosts open source projects for free, but charges closed source projects a fee for using the service. Launchpad uses the Bazaar distributed version control system, which was recently updated to version 1.17.

Canonical founder and CEO Mark Shuttleworth said "Launchpad accelerates collaboration between open source projects. Collaboration is the engine of innovation in free software development".

Previously, the open sourcing of Launchpad was expected to be delayed, according to a post to the Launchpad mailing list advising that the date had been changed from the 21st of July to "July / August 2009". Canonical developer Karl Fogel told The H that, in his post, he hadn't meant that the open sourcing of Launchpad would be delayed, but rather that the Canonical Launchpad team were making sure that they had enough time to test everything properly. Fogel said "The testing went well,".

The Launchpad collaboration site is used to host Ubuntu and thousands of other open source projects, such as MySQL, Zope and Silva. Technical details about the open sourcing of Launchpad can be found on the Launchpad Development Wiki. Launchpad is released under version 3 of the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPLv3).
