Firefox Logo The Mozilla developers have announced the availability of the second release candidate (RC2) for what will become version 3.6 of their open source Firefox web browser, code-named Namoroka. As with the previous development releases, Firefox 3.6 RC2 is based on version 1.9.2 of Mozilla's Gecko web rendering platform. This should be the last release candidate of Firefox 3.6 before it is made available as the new stable version of the Mozilla browser.

According to Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's director of Firefox development, Firefox 3.6 will be the last major release before version 4.0 of the browser. Beltzner says that the development team will instead be working on regular "feature updates" that will be pushed to users as part of the normal 4-6 week security update cycle. Changes that require external testing, however, will only be implemented in new major versions. One such change, for example, is Mozilla's plan to update the user interface for the Windows version of Firefox 4.

As with all development releases, use in production environments and on mission critical systems is not advised. The developers ask users testing the release to provide feedback and report any bugs they encounter.

More details about the release, including a list of known issues, can be found in the release notes. Firefox 3.6 RC2 is available to download for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Existing Firefox 3.6 Beta and Release Candidate users should receive an automatic update. Firefox binaries are released under the Mozilla Firefox End-User Software License Agreement and the source code is released under disjunctive tri-licensing that includes the Mozilla Public Licence, GPLv2 and LGPLv2.1. The latest stable release of Firefox is version 3.5.7 from early January.
