StatusNet has announced the availability of StatusNet 0.9.0, the company's micro-blogging platform which is behind the open source friendly identi.ca Twitter competitor. StatusNet recently announced enterprise support for the platform. The new version of the PHP based OpenMicroBlogging system includes support for OStatus, a specification for distributed status updates, Geolocation handling, an extended authorisation framework, web based administration, a moderation system and the ability to flag user profiles.

One change in StatusNet 0.9.0 is the removal of the 140 character limit in messages, a value originally derived from how Twitter worked with SMS messages. StatusNet can now support messages as small as one character and has no limit on the maximum size, but the default remains at 140 characters for compatibility.

Other highlights of the new release include an LDAP plug-in, real time updates in the web browser, a plug-in to provide a mobile optimised interface, a pluggable caching system, an advertising framework with support for Google AdSense and OpenX and plug-ins to throttle excessive registrations or blacklist URLs and nicknames. A full list of the changes, bug fixes and minor features is available in the change log and the GNU Affero GPL licensed source code is available to download.
