Jaiku code released

As promised, Google has released the Jaiku code under the Apache License 2.0. The open source microblogging platform is now available for interested developers as JaikuEngine on Google Code Project Hosting. JaikuEngine is being served from the Google App Engine and is maintained by Google engineers in their spare time, as Google has stopped developing jaiku.com.

Jaiku will no longer support feed fetching and international SMS due to some scaling and financial restrictions. The new JaikuEngine will include support for OAuth, an open standard authentication protocol, which gives users more control over their interactions with third-party applications. JaikuEngine allows groups, organisations and individuals to create their own microblogging services and deploy them through the Google App Engine.

The Jaiku Mobile client has also been open sourced by Google software engineer Mika Raento and is being released under the GPLv2 and MIT licenses. Users of the client that are using the current build can no longer connect to the server because of the move to the Google App Engine. A new build is expected to be released soon to fix the issue, although a release date has not yet been confirmed.
