Google Code, Google's open source project hosting service, has stopped accepting new projects licensed under the Mozilla Public License (MPL). Earlier in the year, Google Code blocked use of the Affero GPL on hosted projects though it had not explicitly supported the AGPL, with developers listing projects as GPL instead.

Chris Dibona, Google's Open Source Project Manager, has previously said that the licences used on Google Code are selected with an eye to limit licence proliferation. The MPL has been excluded, it is believed, because it is often derived from to create "badgeware", where the licence carries the name of the vendor and is nominally specific to that vendor. Such "badgeware" licences can include extra restrictions on code usage, and may not have undergone scrutiny in the same way as the MPL itself.

Existing MPL projects on Google Code can continue to be hosted. Developers of projects looking for hosting on Google Code can now choose between the Artistic license, GPL (versions 2 and 3), LGPL, Apache 2.0, MIT or new BSD licence.
