IPFire logo The IPFire project development team has announced the first beta release of an ARM port of version 2.11 of its open source firewall. IPFire is a Linux server distribution that can be booted from a CD or USB drive, or installed to a computer's internal drive.

The port of IPFire contains all of the same features as the standard full releases, but can be run on any Marvel Kirkwood system-on-a-chip (SoC) – such as that found in the SheevaPlug – or compatible ARM-based processor. According to Project Leader Michael Tremer, the team had one Dreamplug from Globalscale donated to them for development and building the code for the ARMv5tel platform. The developers expect to release another version for ARMv7hl, which includes embedded hardware floating point support, "in the near future".

The team is currently asking for help from developers, experienced users and companies; it also needs further hardware donations to enable them to expand the number of supported platforms. Interested parties can contact the project by writing to arm@ipfire.org. As with all development releases, use on mission critical systems or networks is not advised.

The first beta of the ARM port of IPFire 2.11 is available to downloadDirect download from the project's site; installation instructions are provided. IPFire is licensed under the GPLv3.
