IPFire Logo The IPFire project has announced an update, Core Update 44, to version 2.9 of their IPFire open source firewall. IPFire is a Linux distribution that can be booted from a CD or USB drive, or installed to a computer's hard disk drive.

According to IPFire Project Leader and developer Michael Tremer, the latest release of the Linux-based firewall includes approximately 400 changes. IPFire 2.9 features improved hardware detection using dracut, and an updated installer. In addition to the default kernel, IPFire 2.9 includes the 2.6.32.28 Linux kernel – a PAE-enabled kernel (physical address extension) that can handle more than 4 GB of memory. Other changes include web user interface improvements, the network time daemon (NTP) enabled by default and a variety of package updates.

A new service called 'fireinfo' has also been added in the release that allows users to send anonymous information about their system back to the project. Tremer strongly recommends that users enable the feature, which is disabled by default, to allow the developers to use the reported statistics to help them make better decisions about the direction of the project. All users are encouraged to update.

More details about the release can be found in the official release announcement and in the change log. IPFire 2.9 (Core 44) is available to download as an ISO image file and an installation guide is provided.
