IPFire 2.3 has been released. The Linux-based firewall distribution has been enhanced with updates to the Linux kernel, openssh, openssl, the Apache web server, the dnsmasq DNS server, the squid web proxy, the collectd system monitor, the drivers for ATL2, madwifi and ntfs-3g, and OpenSWAN, the IPsec implementation. The ipag-ng application has been replaced with vnstat and mbmon hardware monitoring has been replaced by lm-sensors. The ttyUSB device file provides improved support for external 3G/UMTS modems and support for Bluetooth devices, although the latter is identified as still being 'experimental'. With suitable Wi-Fi hardware, IPFire can also work as a wireless base station.

Although older versions can be updated to IPFire 2.3, the developers recommend that the software be reinstalled because of the complexity of the updating process. Details of the changes in IPFire 2.3 can be found in the release announcement. The updated version is available as an ISO or USB installable image to download from the project web site via BitTorrent or HTTP.
