The Eclipse developers have announced the availability of the fourth milestone for Eclipse 3.6, the leading component of the next Eclipse release train called Helios. Building on the previous milestone releases for Eclipse 3.6, the fourth milestone features Virtual Folders that exist only in the workspace and not backed by a directory in a users file system, the ability to execute multiple quick fixes at once and official support for PowerPC 64-bit systems.

UI improvements include additional control for indentation in TextLayout, right-to-left text support on Cocoa and a new layout API. JUnit4 tests are now supported to test the Eclipse Platform, complementing the existing JUnit3 support. By popular demand, -consoleLog has been added to the new default launch configuration arguments.

Three more milestone releases are scheduled up to May of 2010, followed by several release candidates. The final version of Eclipse 3.6 is expected to be released on the 23rd of June, 2010. The Helios development of version 3.6 of Eclipse is taking place at the same time as development for Eclipse 4 (E4). Eclipse 4 will be the "next generation" of the Java development environment that will incorporate several familiar web technologies and reportedly put them to new uses. The latest development release of Eclipse 4, version 0.9, was released at the end of July.

More details about the release can be found the the New and Noteworthy page and in the build notes. Eclipse 3.6 Milestone 4 is available to download from the Eclipse web page and is released under the Eclipse Foundation Software User Agreement.
